Is Marriage Between (Extended) Relatives a Cause of Disability

Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Islāmic Verdicts (18v./1):

Q: Due to the nature of my work in the field of disability, rehabilitation and cooperation with the team members, the percentage of foreigners is large, and they frequently inquire about the instructing of families for parents who frequently have more than one disabled child to stop having children, I thought it was better to delve into from a religious standpoint by giving them the idea that our religion of truth is the first to give a solution to this issue from the hadiths of the Messenger, ﷺ, who urged towards distant marriages and that it is not from a religious aspect, the marriage of relatives, as many understand. I ask Your Excellency to provide me with hadeeths and evidence on this subject, and if there is anything in English, please provide me with it as soon as possible.

Also, I have heard that Islam does not forbid spouses to stop childbirth if they know medically that disabled children will be born, thus increasing the burden on the family and society. How true is that ?

A: There are no authentic hadiths that prohibit marriage between relatives, and the occurrence of disability is only by the decree of Allāh and what is destined (
by Him, and to marry female relatives is not one of its reasons as is rumoured. Moreover, it is not permissible to prevent childbirth due to fear of disability, but rather one must rely fully on Allāh, Glory be to Him, and have good thoughts of Him. And success is with Allāh, and may the salutation of Allāh and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

You notice in the previous fatwā, even with all of the information provided by the questioner, it is clear that the response is correct; there is no reliable evidence that instructs people to wed outside of their families or that relatives getting married is a cause of disability, etc. In actuality, Allah, the Exalted made it legal for His Messenger to wed his cousins.

O Prophet (Muhammad )! Verily, We have made lawful to you your wives, to whom you have paid their Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage), and those (captives or slaves) whom your right hand possesses – whom Allah has given to you, and the daughters of your ‘Amm (paternal uncles) and the daughters of your ‘Ammah (paternal aunts) and the daughters of your Khal (maternal uncles) and the daughters of your Khalah (maternal aunts) who migrated (from Makkah) with you, and a believing woman if she offers herself to the Prophet, and the Prophet wishes to marry her; a privilege for you only, not for the (rest of) the believers. Indeed We know what We have enjoined upon them about their wives and those (captives or slaves) whom their right hands possess, – in order that there should be no difficulty on you. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Surah Al-Ahzab 50

And if one were to read the Seerah of the Messenger and his Companions, they would find many examples of intergenerational marriages that were conducted without objection.
